Legends FC, Appoints Former Arizona State Head Coach as US Soccer Development Academy Director

Josh Hodges, Executive Director and Founder of Legends FC, has announced the appointment of Kevin Boyd as Academy Director and Technical Director for Legends FC. In this newly created role Boyd will run the organization’s US Soccer Development Academy Program, oversee the Academy II program 2004 – 1999, and Head Coach the Legends WPSL Semi-Professional Team. Boyd will focus on working with more than 55 coaches on the overall training regimen and curriculum for the club. Boyd has demonstrated an unequaled skill for developing young talent and preparing athletes to succeed at the highest levels of competition.

“We are so pleased to welcome Kevin to our club and family. He brings not only an impeccable reputation of success as Arizona State’s winningest coach in the history of their women’s soccer program, he has shown the ability to support and develop talent, a core element of the mission of our organization. I am confident that Kevin will play a central role in our efforts to enable young athletes to fully realize their athletic potential,” said Hodges.

Boyd has spent his life on the soccer field, realizing early success at the collegiate level playing for Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, where he was a four-year letter winner and in 1989 received an All-American Honorable Mention. At Tri-State University Boyd was a three-time team captain for the Trojans while earning three all-district selections, three all-area selections and three all-MICL selections as a sweeper. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Tri-State Hall of Fame. After college, Boyd played one year of international soccer as a member of Hamar Kameratena, a Norwegian Elite team in the country’s First Division. From there, Boyd was a member of the Region IV men’s open team (1991-93).

In 1997, Boyd was named head coach of the University of California, Berkley women’s soccer program. He led the Golden Bears to the Pac-10 Championship win in 2005 and is recognized as that program’s winningest coach.  Under Boyd, the Golden Bears produced 28 first or second-team All-Pac-10 Conference selections while also garnering 21 selections to the Academic All-Pac-10 first or second teams.

Most recently, Boyd has served as head coach of the Arizona State women’s soccer program. Boyd led the Sun Devil soccer program to the NCAA Tournament four times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2014). In 2010, he guided the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, only the second time in school history that ASU has made back-to-back NCAA appearances. Boyd holds the distinction of being the winningest coach in the program’s history.

“The Legends FC program is an incredible program for athletic talent and I am excited to join their proven track record of identifying and cultivating the skills and maturity of successful young athletes. I am passionate about what our program can do for young people, not only on the field, but in their lives,” said Boyd.
